OVERVIEW
Known as the “Racing Capital of the World”, Speedway is a separate town within Marion County. However, despite the town being only 7 miles from the center of The Circle City, it still maintains independence with its own police and fire departments, Town Hall, public library, utilities departments, and school system. Unlike many of Indianapolis’ surrounding communities, Speedway has a growing number of single residents and many of its homes were built in the 1960s and 1970s.
LOCATION
The Town of Speedway is located 7 miles from Indianapolis and 6 miles from the Indianapolis International Airport.

GOVERNMENT
Facts :
Indianapolis is the largest city in the United States with a consolidated county-wide government.
Under this consolidation, a mayor and city-council of 29 members are elected every four years in county-wide balloting.
The four cities of Beech Grove, Lawrence, Southport and Speedway (all located in Marion County) are not under the direct control of consolidated government, but voters in those cities are eligible to vote for the Indianapolis mayor and council members.
This unique system, known as Unigov, became effective January 1, 1970 and has become a model of efficient metropolitan government.
The chief administrative officer of Franklin Township is called the Township Trustee. There is also a Township Assessor and a Township Advisory Board. Among the duties of township government are the assessment of taxable property.

RECREATION
The town’s very first 500-Mile Race took place in 1911 and since then the Brickyard 400 and the United States Grand Prix have been added to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s list of lucrative events. Today, the 2.5-mile rectangular track is built on over 500 acres of ground and is the largest, permanent-seating sports venue in the world . The Speedway Museum and Hall of Fame houses memorabilia from over a half century of 500-Mile Race history. In addition to racing, Speedway has several golf courses, a country club, community centers, tennis courts and racquet clubs.
